I came across the following news item today, that a
rather maverick lawmaker has proposed letting 14 year
olds vote in Texas.

I am really pumped that this is even being considered.
14 year olds can be cahrged as adults (and jailed
for life), they can often drive cars, and can begin
working and start paying income and sales taxes.
There should be no taxation without representation.
More importantly, we shouldn't let our young people
spend four of their most formative years
intellectually with absolutely no voice in the
political process. It is no wonder that by the time
they turn 18, many of our young people consider
politics unimportant. Just as citizens of new
democracies in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet
Union have a hard time taking democracy seriously, our
young people have a hard time taking a democracy
seriously that disenfranchises them for years.
Denying rational, sentient, US citizens the vote is
not only immoral - but counterproductive to the
ultimate goal of buildiing a vigorous body politic
from our young people.
I wish I lived in Texas right now to help fight for
this.
