I seem to recall that DB's criticism of LotR was a little more
tongue-in-cheek than his criticism of Star Wars.

Yah. Lately I've been rereading the Potter books, partly for fun and
partly because I feel like Rowling has been leaving clues for future
developments along the way. After I finish those I'm going to tackle
"Software" by Rudy Rucker.
After that I'm thinking I might tackle some ancient history: Herodotus,
Thucydidies (sp?), Plutarch, etc.
And I'm tempted to reread LotR before the first movie comes out this
winter.
