I agree. I first read LotR when my uncle sent me a box of old sf novels
(after all, what are good uncles for? :-)). The amount of detail was
astounding to me, as well as the connection he makes to an even earlier
age. It was his created language "Quenya", that opened my eyes to the
wonderful world of linguistics.
However, it was the "Simarillion" that got me hooked. It explained much
about the history of Middle-Earth while still leaving that intangible
aura of mystery and antiquity.
