I can't prove this, but I suspect that various "suits" had a strong
influence over Brin's early novels that may have altered what he had to
say. For example, we once had a discussion on this List about how the
descriptions of sex become progressively less explicit from his earlier to
his later works.
Thus, I think that as Brin wrote his earlier works, making characters like
Demwa, Baskin, Orley, and Creideiki rather more formulaic heros helped him
get published. I think this is backed up in part by his subsequent works
since establishing himself with _Startide_, where there are none of the
pre-ordained sort of heros to be found. Robert, Maya, the cast of _Earth,
the cast of _Heart of the Comet_, Alvin and Friends, Nelo's children, etc.
are all rather ordinary sorts of people.
