And the thousands of murderers who get caught early by efficient and
effective police work never make it to the point of being serial killers so
they don't show up on the list. *Any* list of serial killers is necessarily
going to list only ones who eluded detection or capture by the police until
they had the chance to commit multiple crimes.
(Not that most murderers have that special "serial killer" bit flipped in
their brains, and not that most of those with the bit flipped might not get
away with several killings before being detected. Just watch out for
self-selecting correlations.)
