I figure that some of the things that happen to a pregnant woman are to
prepare everyone else around her for either what she'll be like after the
baby is born, or what the baby will be like. An example of the latter is
severe impatience regarding the acquisition of food when one is hungry.
(On more than one occasion, my husband has demanded immediate delivery of
the standard bread offered at the restaurant, on the grounds that his wife
is pregnant and hungry. Saves him having to peel me off the manager when
stuff doesn't get to me quickly enough....)
