Then did Chuck Yeager fly the worlds first supersonic glider?  It was
air-launched from a B-29, IIRC.  I'm pretty sure the X-1 was an airplane.

And I'm pretty sure there are an awful lot of naval aviators who would argue
that particular point, too...
