Excellent point, Marvin.   I'd add to that that "now they're incredibly
successful and powerful fools."

In France, at least, I think American resentment is strongly tied to
jealousy of American success.   Several hundred years ago, France was the
center of the intellectual activity and learning, Paris was at the center
of a world-wide empire, and they coined the term "lingua franca" to
describe the dominance of all things French.   

Nowadays, the lingua franca of much of the world is English, the USA is the
most dominant force on the planet, and France isn't even the most dominant
country in *Europe*, let alone the fact that it has only a few miniscule
islands and a slice of South America to show for its worldwide empire.
