Or a company could just buy some of the assets of another company,
including the employment of a few of key employees, leading to references
about how someone got sold to Company X.  Of course, the only case of this
I know of involved getting the go-ahead of the 2 guys being "sold", and
they got all sorts of incentives to stick around for at least a couple of
years.  (And the one who's still there is enjoying working for that
company, more or less, so he doesn't exactly have any complaints about the
"sale".)
