As much as I'm against wasting tax dollars on a missile shield, I don't
believe that the U.S. would ever use their superior firepower to bend nations
to their will.  We didn't do it during the period we were the sole nuke power,
following WWII,  and I don't see that we are doing it now.

I do, however, see how the Chinese could use the NMD as an excuse to beef up
their own arsenal.
