I have been following this discussion for the past few days. I have a few
questions for JDG:
1] What do you mean by the word great [or greater] when you apply it in
the context of a country?
2] Why is our agreement on the issue of America being great needed?
3] Is there any particular time period or any specific aspect of the
American nation that you feel deserves the title great?
I mean no offence but am just trying to understand your point of view.
There is a lot in America that is worthy of praise but I am not aware of any
reason why it should be called great to the exclusion of rest of the
world. Could be I am just unaware.
The same applies to the concept of America being a net force of good in the
world. What do you mean by good in this context? When you call America a
net force of good in the world, are you talking about a consensus [maybe
unstated] in the country to do good deeds for the worlds sake? Are you
referring to the advantages to the rest of the world that were initially the
result of American enterprise? Are you referring to particular incidents
where America acted solely out of a desire to bolster the forces of good
[this is beginning to sound like a fantasy novel], maybe even at the cost of
its own interests? Again, I am looking for some kind of a context in which
to place this statement.
        Hope you can help,
                                                                Ritu
