Doug, I liked them, although I thought that the third one eventually got
excessively dry.  I preferred Bruce Catton's trilogy, on the whole,
although Foote's is probably better written.  His objectivity is not,
however, compromised, in my admittedly somewhat biased opinion.  I would
say, though, that they're probably only worth your time if you're a
serious Civil War buff, otherwise you're probably better off with _Battle
Cry of Freedom_ which is probably the best one-volume history of the Civil
War.
