Looking at what's on the box, Generations Family Tree may be better for
your purposes than Family Tree Maker, but I'd ask someone who uses
Generations Family Tree to be sure.
Genealogical websites include http://www.rootsweb.com/ and
http://www.cyndislist.com/ ; these are both very good sites. You might
want to check out http://www.CyndisList.com/software.htm#Articles as a
resource for trying to figure out what software would be good for your
purposes.
