Feh, and that was one of NASA's coddled manned-spaceflight launches. The
only one that's blown up that spectacularly. Unmanned launches tank much
more frequently. I presume that's a combination of numbers (more unmanned
vs. manned launches) and extra care around the precious human cargo.
There is a failure rate for launches; it will be low but non-zero.
Therefore, there will be launch accidents. And launch accidents are much
messier than highway accidents.
Has anyone mentioned using subduction zones to slurp nuclear waste back into
the mantle on this thread yet? The Uplift series of books suggested that one
to me.
