In what ways doesn't MS do this?

Please look at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/

Full documentation on how to write applications and services using the
various MS platforms. Every API there is, every language MS supports, every
nook and cranny you could want. Fully disclosed compatibility with literally
millions of applications; *billions* if you count web pages that support
various public standards in addition to Windows executables.

If the cable systems let me write my own digital cable box and provided this
level of support, that would be sweet. The telephone networks let third
parties tie in provided they have sufficient service contracts (e.g.
Net-to-Phone services), and pretty much anyone can build a Caller ID box,
but it's hardly the level of interop that Microsoft exposes.

What am I missing? Should Microsoft should ship a copy of MacOS in every box
of Windows or something?

Joshua
