>From your statement I conclude that you can put an exact price tag on the
damage done to the atmosphere. I'm curious: how do you determine the exact
amount of money that corresponds with the damage done to the atmosphere by
burning one gallon of gasoline?

Do you have any idea why we'd rather let the government decide on that? It's
because the government (ideally) goes for the option that benefits society
most, while the market will go for the option that results in the highest
profits.

<Return to normal conversation> Ahem. There's a whole lot of angels that can dance on
that pin you call 'ideally'. Your right, that's the difference. That's why the US was
created, because we didn't want a government deciding for us what was best all of the
time, or even part of the time. Benifits society most, blhhh.
"The government has decided today that it would benifit society most if everyone went
to <any religious function> at least once a week. Your identi-cards will be scanned at
these fuctions to prove that you are doing your part to benifit society."

"The government anounced today that it would benifit society most if all adults over
the age 23 were in a monogamonus relationship. If you do not already have a partner,
one will be selected for you. You may change partners by notifying your local
governing board, in advance. No one will be allowed to be single for more than 2 weeks
in any 52 weeks."

"The government wishes to inform you that it will benifit society most if all children
are taught in a standardised manner beginning at the age of 8 months. Parents or legal
guardians will be permitted to interact with their children for 3 hours each day and
24 hours every other weekend."

"The government has decided that it will benifit society most if all passangers in a
moving vehicle shall wear a seat belt at all times. Even if you are in a private
community where the speed limit is 15MPH and there are speed bumps every 30 feet you
still must wear a selt belt. All motorcycles riders must wear helmets, not that it
will noticably save your life, it will just make it that much easier for your
relatives to identify you without the smushed head."
