Anyone ever told you what smileys stand for ... From the tone of most of
your responses to most of my not really seriously made remarks, I expect
nobody ever did.

What the smiley in this case stood for is that I'm aware that there is a
rather intense gun control issue in the USA and the only thing that is
certain about it, is that nearly everybody disagrees on how to resolve it.

It is something we Europeans smile about, since we don't *have* a gun
control  issue on account of the government interference on this topic. And
this attitude actually is something most people in Europe can agree about.
(Except for the majority of the real  hardened criminals that is) Besides
most of us Euros cannot understand that strange craving for the posession of
guns the Americans have.

Call it a major cultural difference. :o) <--- And this smiley means that
this post is intended to be friendly and I am not at all trying to bite your
head off. :o) OK? :o)
