JDG's tagline contains the following quote:
We are products of the same history, reaching from Jerusalem and
Athens to Warsaw and Washington. We share more than an alliance.
We share a civilization. - George W. Bush, Warsaw, 06/15/01
I read this, over and over, in John's voluminous number of posts, and it
puzzles me. Because I also read quotes from administration members like
"Basically, we're going to continue to do our own thing here" (Christie
Whitman) regarding the environment or engaging in "a la carte
multinationalism" (Richard Haass) regarding joining other nations in
policies when it suits us.
Whether or not the decisions made by the administration are right or wrong,
and frankly, I don't know that any of us really have all the facts on any of
these matters, can our President really make a statement like that in good
consience when he clearly doesn't give one rat's whisker what the rest of
this civilization thinks, or when he's made it clear that he's unwilling to
even discuss certain topics?
I just wonder what context that quote was made in, and if anyone else finds
it ironic at all.
Jim
