We did baby sign language with my daughter when she was little. It worked
fairly well. She tended to make up her own signs and we'd have to remember
them rather than the other way around. Laura had a vocabulary of about 20
signs or so. Not a lot but enough. At times it really helped her deal with
her frustration of not being able to communicate. The biggest drawback was
that my wife and I were the only ones who could understand it, obviously.
So when we left her with a sitter or something, she'd be unable to use the
signs.
Ironically, our son never picked it up. He has a cleft lip and palate and
has been *very* slow to develop verbal communication. He really could have
benefited from it. But he doesn't seem to have the same drive to
communicate that our daughter did.
