I heard this too when we taught signs to our daughter. But it definitely
didn't delay verbal communication with her. This is the girl who could
recite (and recognize) all the letters of the alphabet at 20 months. I
think that if a child has the drive to communicate, they will, the best way
they are able. And once they realize that verbal is better than sign,
they'll do that. If they don't have that drive, it doesn't matter what you
do.
