I don't know if there is any research on whether teaching sign inhibits
speech with developmentally disabled people, but I do know that it does
not do so with infants. In fact the research shows that signing
infants begin to speak earlier than non-signing infants. Signing will
not delay your baby's speech.
And even if signing delayed/inhibited speech, so what? The goal is
increased communication. Meaningful communication is what is
important, not the mode of the communication. If signing is easier for
a Down's person, then by God let them sign!
So, if I understand how this works, you now flame me as a destroyer of
children? And then I say that you must not really love you kids. Then
you say that you thought about bringing up my cannibalism conviction
but decided not to because that would be stooping to my level?
Hmmmm....maybe we should go back to a safer discussion area, like why
America is the greatest country of all time?
