It is you, John, who are neglecting to consider the consequences
of the actions you advocate.
The problem with letting food prices go down to a "natural" level
is that the low prices would require most farms in the U.S. to shut
down and (maybe) open up in other countries where they can keep
costs down. From a purely *economic* point of view, you might
call this a Good Thing. However, from a logistical point of view
it would be inviting disaster to have another country in charge of
something so basic as food production for your country.
Agriculture is subsidized the world over because no politician
(hopefully) would be so stupid as to put all of their eggs in
someone else's basket.
