Some observations: as Corporations consolidate (an inevitable trend
esp. ikn deregulated industries because entrenched power structures will
NOT just "give it up" evne if the law is supposed to open up
competition) they grow into monopolies. Politicians and others who say
they are pro business (pro free enterprise) are really pro monopoly,
because they get all their funding from these companies that keep growing
into each other like some metasizing cancer!
Airlines. TElecom. we've seen it repeatedly: The government
deregulates (ostensibly) to *end* a monopoly. Upstart comapnies rush in
and create a competitive feeding frenzy (remember People Express or
Republic Airlines? jeez, or even what wahs the name of that DSL
outfit?) meanwhile the biggies start merging like mad even as a shakeout
weeds out most of the new competitors and the rest get bought out. So
we're back to monopolies but this time in the name of "competition."
Doesn't it kinda make sens for a monpoloy to lobby to get its monopoly
taken way, because they know they'll get it back eventually?
oh well, at least now the airlines get to soak the rich business
travelers to subsidize poor toursits liek me....otoh when my brother and i
were babies my family flew out to visit grandparents on regultaed fares -
I think kids always got to fly for half price. Would I have know my
grandmother as well if it had been full price? Depends on whether there
was a fare war I guess.
