I was also going to suggest "Diaspora" as something for Trevor to look at.
The very beginning deals with the DNA-style recombination to form an AI
"embryo". One of these days I'll actually finish Diaspora!
Another book to read would be "Blood Music" by Greg Bear. That deals with
the development of intelligent cells, where DNA is used for computational
purposes. As I understand it, each cell became both a computer and a
separate "program", so different data is created by manipulating the DNA to
form a new cell that then gets used in AI computation.
