_Blood_Music_ is one of those classics that every fan of sci-fi should read 
(imho).  It's hard to say more about it that what Brett already said without 
getting too spoilerish, but it's a truly fantastic story and very well 
written.

Speaking of those classics that every sci-fi fan should read, if we had to 
come up with a list of 10 (or 50 or 100) sci-fi books or series that are 
must-reads, what would we as a group put on it?  And should the Uplift books 
count as one series, or as two?
