I think there is a biological reason: your own species might depend on the
survival of an other species.

Example: predators (lions) hunting prey (antilopes). When hunting for food,
a lion will go for the old and weak members of the herd of antilopes. The
lion might do that simply because the old and weak are easier to catch, but
by removing them from the herd he keeps the rest of the herd healthy. This
benefits the lion because this will ensure the survival of the herd, which
means he will still have something to eat later on.

<Disclaimer>
Before someone starts ranting, I am NOT suggesting that we should keep the
human species healthy by killing off the old and weak ones.
