North Korea captured USS Pueblo, an electronic surveillance ship sailing in
international waters off the coast of North Korea. The crew were paraded in
front of cameras for propaganda purposes, and many of them made the gesture
known in the US as "the bird" or "the finger." This gesture is widely
interpreted in the US as meaning "F--K You!". The crew made this gesture in
order to let the Navy and US Government know that what the words they were
saying (had been told to say) were so much nonsense. When the NK security
people noticed the gesture, they were told it was a Hawaiian greeting.
Later, many of the crew were beaten severely when the NK security police
found out differently.
