I'll grant that "hero" may be too glib.  On the other hand, a questionable
past doesn't invalidate a valiant act in the present--hence the pleased
surprise with which many queasy Americans have greeted the good
performance of Giuliani and Bush, for instance--they've stepped up to the
challenge of the crisis.  Barbara stepped up, alone, to face a challenge
presented by another aspect of the current crisis.
