There are a few good reasons for using a debit card instead of cash.
Convenience is one of them. Safety is another one.
It is convenient, because as long as the amount of money in your bank
account is sufficient, you never have the problem of being just five cents
short of cash when you want to pay. It is convenient, because you never risk
getting too little change back. For business owners it is convenient,
because it eliminates the chance of giving customers too much change back.
It is safe, because cash that is not there can not be stolen.
Imagine you would go to an ATM to get cash, and then spend it.
First you have to get your cash out of the machine -- someone might grab the
money and run off with it. You then have to go to the store -- someone might
steal your wallet on your way there. After you have paid, that cash has to
be stored -- the store might get robbed. At the end of the day, someone will
have to bring that cash money to the bank -- and might get robbed.
Basically, you first withdraw money from your account, then spend it, after
which someone has to bring the cash to the bank to put it in the company's
bank account. With a debit card, the money goes immediately from your
account to the store's account. Much safer.
True, someone might also steal your debit card, but it takes only one phone
call to the bank to have your card blocked, rendering it useless to the
thief.
As for paying with credit cards: I can pay a lot with mine, but I can not
use there where a lot of my money is spend: in the supermarket...
