<< Given all the above, it is obvious that there are indeed posts in which
mere criticism of Israel was called anti-Semitism. >>

Well, but it is also obvious that 99% (at least) of all criticism of Israel
*IS* motivated by anti-Semitism, sometimes trying to get away with
masquerading as "mere criticism of Israel". It can be hard for Jews and
Israelis and people who are friends of Jews and Israel to distinguish.

Given what happened to the Jews in the last century (and the past 2000+
years, for that matter), I think any critic of Israel should examine himself
extra-hard and with rigorous honesty to make sure that he is NOT motivated by
anti-Semitism.

And be fair, while you're at it. It's hard to take criticism of Israel
seriously when it comes from people & countries whose own behavior is
infinitely worse. I mean, Syria accusing Israel of human rights violations?
Don't make me barf.

Which is not to say that Israel does not merit criticism on some matters. But
when ALL you hear is criticism with never a positive word - well, it's simple
human nature to get defensive and be far more supportive than you would
otherwise be.
