Beautiful! A group of us went out to Jones Beach on Long Island. (1/2 hour
by car from the house). Arrived at 4:30 and stayed past 6:30. Jones is a
wonderful observation point -- very little light pollution from the city or
surrounding towns and a taste of the Big Sky I used to enjoy in Texas.
Crystal-clear skies and very few planes. We lay on our backs and sipped hot
cocoa to the light show.

They were very frequent and quite colorful. I lost count after about 5:45,
but I was up to 310! I was also surprised by the number that left visible
contrails that lasted several seconds.

The beach was pretty crowded though. There must have been several hundred
people in the 1/8 - 1/4 mile of space around us. And before 5am, a large
group of people sang 'God Bless America' in hushed voices twice.
