IMHO, the following article makes some of the best
points about the future of the United States'
engagements that I have yet seen.

Some of the key points are thus:

1) The events of September 11th make the need for
national missile defense an imperative. It has become
clear that terrorists thrive in large part due to the
evil empires that support them. Terrorism can be
confronted, however, by using international coalitions
to confront these States. Yet, can you imagine what
US Foreign Policy would like if the Taliban had
nuclear-tipped ICBM's? Or if Osama bin Laden fled to
an Iraq that was protected by nuclear-tipped ICBM's?
The US would be faced with the very pleasant choice of
letting bin Laden continue to operate with impunity or
a nuclear exchange with Iraq.

Yikes.

2) The enemies of freedom will inevitably come for us.
They came for us when they sank the Lusitania, they
came for us at Pearl Harbor, and they came for us on
September 11th.

Which means, of course, that the freedom of the United
States will never be truly secure until the butchers
of Beijing have been displaced from their control of
the land and one billion plus people of China.

Double yikes.
