seems like a fairly small, precise, strike really, esp. compared to the
Gulf War's 1st night, (and Kosovo) ... i guess thats due to the fairly
different nature of this conflict.

It does look that way.  We can't bomb Afghanistan back into the Stone Age,
after all, as that would be progress for them.  This is a remarkably
target-sparse environment.  There isn't much worth hitting that's even as
expensive as the bombs we'll be dropping on them.  As far as I can tell the
initial strikes were designed to, first, eliminate whatever air-defense
capacity the Taliban might have, second, destroy those capital assets of the
Al Quaeda network that we have been able to identify (and some reports have
stated that at least one of the camps was active and had a mockup of
portions of LAX), and third, to weaken the support structure of the Taliban
in the hope of toppling the government.  But there are real limits as to
what air power can do in this situation.
