Deep, deep question. Why is it that it's semirespectable to read an endless series of retreads like the Pern novels, but it's frowned upon to enjoy stuff like Conan? I have to confess that I've always associated Pern with the dragon-riding equivalent of the stereotypical girls' "horsey-stage." Something about the hypnotic quality of having massive muscular animals throbbing and straining between one's legs, I suppose. (Which is why guy-fantasy focuses on horse-sized men who slay dragons take their place, I suppose.) Marvin Long Austin, Texas
