> Behalf Of Gautam Mukunda > So what? Every major American media outlet has a _very_ high wall between > news and editorial product and ownership and advertising.
Then it is pretty much the only nation with a media that does so. The owners control who is the editor, the editor has final say in what news and commentary makes it into the media. Regardless of the journalists producing the content, it is the editor who calls the shots and the editor is appointed by the owner. Most papers and some TV networks will have explicit statements of journalistic integrity. This often includes a "no control of editorial matter" statement by the owner, but it still boils down to the owner having the final say through the setup of the editor/editorial committee. Maybe the US is different, but the media in Australia, in Britain and in France all exhibit the same type of structure: dependent on who the owner chooses as the editor/editorial committee. Or is it coincidence that in an Australian or British election the entire News Ltd (Murdoch) stable of publications will all opt for the same political party in the pre-polling editorials? Brett
