My impression is that it's supposed to represent the normal drift that's inherent in English. Keep going, you'll see more of it.

BTW, I finished Kiln People this weekend, and am ready to discuss it when enough folks are up for it. I also stumbled across a copy of Forgiveness. I'm afraid I didn't care much for Scott Hampton's watercolors in Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic, but we'll see how it goes.
