Alberto Monteiro asked
<<Uh? What do you mean? If I decide to become a (religious) Jew I would have
no right to Israeli citizenship unless I could dig out some (ethnic) Jewish
ancestor?>>

Ilana
If your conversion is Orthodox you have a right to Israeli citizenship.

Alberto Monteiro
<<OTOH, if an (ethnic) Jew who professes any religion [Christian, Satanist,
Marxist, etc] has the right to Israeli citizenship?>>

Ilana
In most cases - no.

Alberto Monteiro
<<And what is the definition of an ethnic Jew? Is there any DNA test for
that? :-)>>

The definition is - "one whose mother is Jew", but The Law of Return gives
Israeli citizenship to "any Jew and his/her family" and "grandson/daughter
of Jew and his/her family". My mom's cousin is married to Belo-Russian,
their daughter is married to Lithuanian, their granddaughter is married to
Dutch - only my mom's cousin is a Jew - but all the family has Israeli
citizenship (except Dutch guy - I don't know if Dutch rules permit double
citizenship. Jeroen?)
