Uh? What do you mean? If I decide to become a (religious)
Jew I would have no right to Israeli citizenship unless
I could dig out some (ethnic) Jewish ancestor?
OTOH, if an (ethnic) Jew who professes any religion
[Christian, Satanist, Marxist, etc] has the right to
Israeli citizenship?
And what is the definition of an ethnic Jew? Is there
any DNA test for that? :-)
The rule in Judaism is that if your mother is Jewish you are Jewish; if your mother is not you are not a jew. Therefore everyone with a jewish mother has the right of return. If you convert to Judaism and this conversion is recognized by the Orthodox Jewish hiearchy in Israel you are a Jew and have the right to return. If you convert to Conservative or Reform Judaism your conversion will not be recognized by the Orthodox Rabinate in Israel (or the US) and they will not consider you a Jew.
