Actually, the civilian SST project NASA was working on was cancelled for
environmental reasons, largely.  No one has been able to figure out how to
build such an aircraft in a way that wouldn't seriously deplete ozone in the
upper atmosphere.  A friend of mine was developing the software for its
flight control system; he always knew that funding was shakey, but he and a
lot of others were quite surprised by the final blow.
