Do you mean this without context? Surely the degree to which Linux is being
used for servers is impressive. And it's very impressive that even Sun has
now jumped on the Linux bandwagon.

While I think it is quite reasonable to argue that Linux won't make a big
impact as a desktop OS for the masses (soon, anyway), it seems unreasonable
to argue that it isn't very significant on servers.

At the same time, I can sympathize with the frustration about remembering
and finding the appropriate Linux commands. In truth, it's probably no less
complex than Windows, but since I touch my server less often (it's too
reliable, I guess), I have trouble recalling fairly basic things about it.
And I tend to be a bit terrified about certain upgrades and installations,
out of fear that I will really break the system. On the other hand, I've
broken it a couple of times and had a hard disk fail, yet managed to rebuild
the system quickly. The only losses were things that I filed to back up.
Speaking of which, backup drives me nuts. I tried and tried to get a tape
drive to work. Never did. Now I mount the RAID on my Win2000 box and write
the backup there. But it's never been reliable about properly mounting the
Windows directory. I need Samba in reverse. Permissions also drive me
nuts. If I never have to use chmod and chown again, I'll be happy. Gimme a
GUI there!
