I have always made this association with what is ugly, after reading an article where some scientist used morphing software to merge hundreds of images of people's faces. The result was the the end product was extremely attractive. The basis of the study was that the most average features of a face are the most attractive. The inverse is deviations from the average are considered 'ugly'. Bigger noses, eyes to wide apart, small chins - essentially off the average. So, using Mendel's principles, one would presume that people who would be considered ugly, may have few features that would be considered ugly, while other features would be considered normal, but unnoticed. One would have to assume that features that fall off the average are recessive. This becomes revelant when there is mating between two 'ugly' people, in that the tendency even with 'ugly' people is to have children that appear closer to the average, or more attractive.
Now what would be considered 'ugly'? If a gene pool in a specific geographic region was limited, there would be deviations from what could be considered the 'Global' average, and we see examples of this in certain locations, where some of these deviations are considered beautiful to the locals, but are considered 'ethnic' to others. The cycle goes on and on, as the global averages shift, nature compensates in the next generation. I also read something about how human phermones affect us in that 'attractive' scents could be chemical indicators for complementary immune systems - the temptation that the offspring may have stronger immune systems through this union. This could be a factor in the apparent 'bad vision' of some couples.
