The Wall Street Journal's OpinionJournal.com site puts out a daily e-mail
("Best of the Web Today") that summarizes and comments on a variety of
editorial newspaper columns. Their angle is most definitely from the
political Right. (Think of the political positions of Andrew Sullivan, Matt
Drudge, Fox News Channel and, of course, the Wall Street Journal.)

Anyway, this appeared in Tuesday's issue:

The U.S. is used to being blamed for the weather ("global warming"). Now the
Russian news agency Itar-Tass is carrying a report blaming America for an
earthquake:

*** QUOTE ***

The earthquake that shook Central and South Asia last Sunday might have been
triggered by super-modern weapons intensively used by the U.S. aviation in
the seismically dangerous areas of Afghanistan, a source in a Moscow
geo-physical research center has told Itar-Tass on condition of anonymity.

*** END QUOTE ***

The Web site of the U.S. Geological Survey
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/020303120822.html actually carries a
denial of the allegation:

*** QUOTE ***

Although small near-surface earthquakes have been generated by human activity
such as mining and reservoir loading, the depth and magnitude of this event
preclude any connection with human activity including the recent bombing.

*** END QUOTE ***

Memo to rest of world: It's true that America is the mightiest country in the
world, possibly in history. And if you want to worship us, we're cool with
that. But we aren't actually God. Some things we don't control.
