Gee, thanks a lot, Jeroen.
I voted in the Republican primary this past Tuesday. Both our current
and future residences are in the new U.S. Congressional district that
Texas got as a result of updated population information after the new
census. There were plenty of people wanting that congressional seat,
but none of them were Democrats, and a fair number of them were
Republicans. Given the voting record of the various counties and parts
of counties in this new district, it's pretty much a done deal that
whoever won the Republican primary would be elected to Congress in
November of this year. So, given that, the way to indicate my
preference as to who would best represent me was to vote in that
Republican primary, making me a registered Republican, and I don't think
*I* deserve that remark.
Nobody got a majority, so the 2 candidates that did the best will be in
a runoff in April. My first choice was the guy who came in 2nd, John
Carter. I really, really hope he wins; I've met him personally, as he's
one of the judges I've dealt with when going in for jury duty, while the
other guy is a businessman who has a mansion in or near Houston,
possibly in Rob's county, who bought a condo in College Station to be a
resident of the new district so he could run. I consider him no better
than a carpetbagger, and hope that enough other folks voting in the
runoff feel the same way. Besides, who wouldn't want to vote for
someone named John Carter? :)
And that's not the only position that will probably have only an
unopposed Republican candidate on the ballot come November, at the local
level. That one was just the most important to me.
