Maybe it's a dumb idea but it is how I read my mail when I have a massive amount of messages. I take the last recieved message and do a search through all headers and bodys of my mail with one or two keywords mentioned in the header. So I get the thread and the threads it originated from as well as the threads that are spinn offs. I can then read in sequence or put all found messages aside into a different directory for reading at a later time. If there are different headers in the ones I found I can systematically do another search finding related or tangential threads. Or if the body and the header don't match I can split it. However that would mean you'd find the relevant words first. I'm not sure you can do it with software though.
