Before Israel can or will give back an inch, the Palestinians (and the Arabs too) have to come out and say that Israel has an unequivocal, undeniable, irreducible right to exist as a Jewish state, and that they now and forever completely renounce any claim to any part of the state of Israel. They have to say it loudly, in Arabic, to their own people, as well as directly to the Israelis.
If they want land, they have to be willing to offer peace. Real peace, eternal peace. Nothing less. There are Israelis who want to dismantle the settlements and just let the Palestinians have their own state. (Although god knows what it will look like; the other Arab countries that already exist are all such wonderful examples of democracy and freedom...), but no Israeli can possibly simply give anything back without an ironclad guarantee that once they do so, the Palestinians will accept it and not keep trying for more and more and more until they finally achieve their goal of driving all the Jews into the Mediterrenean (the ones they haven't blown up in restaurants and hotels and pizzerias and Seders and on buses and street corners...) The Israelis do not have all the power, and the Palestinians are not helpless - the Palestinians are backed by 150 million Arabs who have all the money in the world at their disposal. The Israelis are a tiny country facing extinction - why can't you see this? Tom Beck "I always knew I'd see the first man on the Moon. I didn't realize I'd also see the last." - Jerry Pournelle
