There were some pretty strong IAAMOAC moments in there as well I 
thought.  I remember a talk where Brin went on about how heros in movies 
make some pretty stupid moves for the sake of the story (or perhaps more 
accurately lazy writing), so hearing a character directly say it was 
interesting to me.  Admittedly, it was maybe a bit distracting from the 
story to hear the author's voice in my head, but I didn't mind.

I'm not really sure if Brin is becoming more of a message author or if I'm 
just more familiar with his messages outside of fiction so see them more 
clearly in his fictional works.  Maybe it's more there are strong theme 
books and weaker theme books?  I have to admit I'd not given it a lot of 
thought before...
