It sounds like the drive is malfunctioning. That is not normal. I suspect that the sensor that detects that the door is open or closed is faulty. When I have seen this type of behavior, it is from two things - Something funny is in the drive affecting its function, or there is a mechanical problem with the tray. The cd-rom is made to close when pressure is put upon an open tray. Soemthing is telling it that it is being pressed. If you have kids, they are usually rough with the tray, and they tend to dislocate the tray, or they put toys in the cd-rom to see if it will close, or they try to pull the tray out. As I have mentioned in the past, I had a 2 year-old hand me a snapped off tray.
Usually in your situation, it is time to replace the drive. I am mechanically inclined enough to take the drive case off to look for any obvious dislocation or mechanical problem. One time I found a second cd-rom in the drive. I have also found that the cheap cd-roms, with a lot of use, last only about a year or so, before they start getting jiggy. The replacement costs is about $35, and is simple to install.
