OK. I used to work as the programming manager at a health insurance company
(a PPO, actually). I was interviewing this guy for a programmering
position. Everything look very good. His resume was excellent, the
interview had gone well, I thought that he might be a good fit for the
company.

At the end of the interview, I always ask: "Do you have any questions?"

He said to me: "I know this might sound a little funny, but do you or any of
the companies you cover offer insurance benefits to same-sex partners?"

This surprised me, just a bit. At this point, I started thinking that the
guy might be gay and was wondering about covering a partner. "Uh, no. I
know that our company doesn't but I don't know about any of the other
companies we might cover. Why do you ask?"

"Well," he replied, "I would never want to work at a company that would do
that sort of thing. But if your company doesn't, that's OK."

At that point, I decided that this guy wasn't a very good fit. I mean with
60+ people on an IT staff, odds are some of them are gay. How would this
guy fit in if he found something like that out. So I thanked him very much
and that was the end of that.

Actually, it was probably for the best. If he had an attitude like that, he
and I probably wouldn't have gotten along very well. Hopefully, he got a
job somewhere else where they have the same sort of attitude.
