We find they last longer, require less maintenance, and most importantly, the students can't steal the balls to throw at each other at lunchtime. One comment I would make is that the variance you get between a cheap crappy mouse and a good quality mouse is amplified in optical mice. The cheaper ones dim too quickly and take too long to notice that they're moving. Ours work on anything non-reflective (even the laptop screen or your jeans leg when space is limited) but my glass dining room table causes no end of grief.
