I love them - I've replaced all my personal mice with either cordless
optical or standard optical, and I've just finished ripping out about
400 or so mice at work and replacing them with optical ones.
We find they last longer, require less maintenance, and most
importantly, the students can't steal the balls to throw at each other
at lunchtime.
One comment I would make is that the variance you get between a cheap
crappy mouse and a good quality mouse is amplified in optical mice. The
cheaper ones dim too quickly and take too long to notice that they're
moving.
Ours work on anything non-reflective (even the laptop screen or your
jeans leg when space is limited) but my glass dining room table causes
no end of grief.

Cheers
