Just retrieved the servers from our old place and everything is moved, including the wandering cat, of course. Other than the fact that we were leaving, the big problem with the run-away cat was that he'd *never* been outdoors, so we had no idea if he'd find his way home. But seven hours after he disappeared, after we had combed the neighborhood, he showed up. He seems quite comfortable in our new place, though the sight of a spinning ceiling fan seems to induce a bit of panic. And we have four of them in various rooms...
I found out a very weird thing about the phone company during this move. Ordered new service and discovered three different lines, with dial tone, into our new place. Using caller ID, I found the one that was ours. The weird thing about the other two is that they are lines that are in service to other people in the neighborhood. The phone company told me that they don't bother to physically disconnect the wires when they re-assign a number. They call these "floaters". The phone company woman acknowledged that this is, as one might imagine, a bit of a security risk for those people. And if I wanted them disconnected, the phone company would charge me $45. So I just disconnected them on the customer side of the interface (which is all that the phone company apparently would have done). But I could still go into my backyard, plug a phone into the interface and make all the long-distance calls I'd like, for a while, anyway. Very strange. Now I'm wondering if there's someone out there sharing our phone line... So, things are getting back to normal. The placeholder machine for brin-l is still off-line, but I'll have it back shortly.
